Today's Skill is Fire Building for recreation.
Fire is an important part of our outdoor experiences. There are many different uses for fire like cooking, keeping warm, keeping away unwanted wildlife, and just to sing and tell stories around. Here are the steps to building a fire for the last reason ( singing and telling stories around ) I will be breaking down each step in more detail in later posts.
STEP 1. have a fire ring. This is so important because we do not want to scar the earth to much and it help keep the fire contained. You should also have a bucket of water and a shovel around a fire to put it out.
STEP 2. Find small burnable materal called Tinder. these would be things like pine needles, bark on the ground, catail fuzz. you will need a significant amount of this maternal. put this in a pile next to your fire ring
STEP 3. Find sticks and small burnable materials called kindling. these are sticks that are about the size of your pinky. Put them in a pile around your fire pit
STEP 4. Find Lager logs called Fuel. These can chopped wood bigger then pinky but not bigger then your arm.
STEP 5. Make a log cabin with your Fuel. ( set up like a square ) then put your tinder down. make sure that you leave space so that air can get in. then put your kindling on top of that. finally put a few pieces of fuel on top of it all.
STEP 6. light the Tinder and let it get going. in the beginning you will need to add kindling to the fire but not so much that you take aware the air.
STEP 7. Once your Fuel kindling is burning well you can more fuel to your fire and then make sure that ( and this is the most important part ) sing and laugh and enjoy your great fire.
